12/24/2023 0 Comments Tv tropes spec ops the lineUsually games focus on game-play and all other aspects play a fairly secondary role, but that is not the case in Yager Studios’ first release. Its unique approach to engaging the player is vastly different from every other shooter game. The game doesn't do itself any favors by wrestling with established storytelling conventions. Spec Ops: The Line is one of the most important titles I’ve played this console generation. Too bad you don't meet him or see him do bad guy stuff for at least an hour after you're told that he's your new enemy. I mean, what story does that?! Oh but don't worry there's a second bad guy. Jason died or was otherwise knocked unconscious after he fell of the bridge in the opening.Īlso it didn't help matters that the antagonist is killed at the end of the 2nd act. The only alternative to the narrative that I can come up with is that most of the story is a dream. The game simply doesn't provide enough contradictory clues to reinforce any of these things. I thought it was weird how fast Jason went from average joe to murder machine. The imagery of mirrored objects, characters, and landscapes evokes duality or plurality (two different things are happening at once). The promotional videos the company put out stated some Tyler Durden shit with Vaas and Jason. I came into this game fully expecting a story that has more than meets the eye. With such a large portion of this games audience not receiving these messages it can only be considered a failure. The vast majority of critics and players arrived at the same conclusion that it had a luck luster but serviceable story. The purpose of any artistic work is to communicate an emotion or idea to the audience. But simultaneously, the idea of the Rakyat needing help from Jason is false? Are Jason's perception of his combat skills false, even though they're used to saved his friends from the suffering (which isn't part of the fantasy)? Neither of these are part of the fantasy. Clearly some things in the game are real, because the of the ending, and because of the brutal suffering of his friends. The problem I have with this interpretation is that there is no line between what is real and what is an illusion. Delusions are shattered when reality comes crashing down upon Jason. Anytime he seems to truly fail some cheat code gets put in and he manages to survive.Īpparently the truth is that the tribal 'good guys' aren't actually peace loving themselves, which is why he ends up stabbed and losing his friends in the 'bad' ending. Throughout the game he is going to be killed in non-direct methods, which he ultimately escapes from, as in the movies like James Bond. He feels, because of Hollywood culture such as Avatar, that he is needed as the savior of the defenseless natives. Applying his western thought and will power lets him overcome any challenge placed in front of him. There are clear good guys in the natives, and clear bad guys pirates and smugglers. So, if I'm understanding this correctly, Jason is an unreliable narrarator who perceives the island as a delusional, western white boy would.
